Day 35: Prague Tuesday 14 July

We had a relaxed start, which was nice, and then off on a tour of sights selected by Jen.

We had a look inside the church next door first.

We had a bit of a wander through the streets, then it was coffee and snack at a nearby cafe.

Next was watching the clock in the clock tower. On the hour it chimes and these 2 upper shutters open to reveal a succession of puppet-like figures that represent saints and peek out the windows. Kind of cute but hard to see when the Sun is above the tower.

After some more sights we climbed up the clock tower and for great views of the city.

You can see some of the clocks as you climb the stairs. Or you could pay €10 each to go up the lift. We didn’t!

We had lunch at the Louvre cafe where Einstein and Kafka used to dine. It’s rather grand and is not far from the University. Great food. I had a Reuben sandwich and Mike and Jen had salads.

All the market stalls display their fruit beautifully.

There are loads of shops and stalls selling cannabis products.

Not far from the Louvre is a square with a giant sculpture of Kafka’s head. At 4pm each day, the individual components of the sculpture move so that the head seems to turn and transform. It goes for about 15 minutes, eventually ending up at the original position. It’s extremely clever and great to watch.

After a short break back at the apartment we set off for a walk down to the river and an hour long river cruise.

This is a power station. There’s a dam on part of the river and it produces enough electricity to power the street lights in Prague

That was fun and you see the buildings overlooking the river from a different perspective.

We only just got back and it started to rain. Didn’t last long but it sent everyone scurrying for cover. That’s the first rain we’ve had in 5 weeks. They need rather more than that.
