Day 23 Vidin Bulgaria: Thursday 2 July 

Another hot day!  We had a morning on the boat and then a trip around the town of Vidin in the afternoon to see a fortress combined with castle. The only castle in Bulgaria in fact. 

It’s very well preserved and has had no restoration as it was never penetrated. Although I think it may have been sold to the Ottomans at some stage.

This is the oldest synagogue in Bulgaria. Although the Bulgarians united to protect all Bulgarian Jews during WW2, after the war, all the Jews left so now it’s a cultural centre.

Then it was back on the bus and off to see some rocks. We were not sure what that was all about until we got there but it was very much worth a visit. Not only great scenery but also some good stair climbing exercise. 

They are sandstone formations originally created after the sea retreated.

It was quite challenging for people nervous about heights and/or with stability issues.

Of course there were coffee and loo breaks beforehand and opportunities to purchase fridge magnets. I’m going to need a bigger fridge. 

Not entirely sure what you are meant to do with these foxes!

We had a great night dancing following a barbecue dinner up on the sky deck and a performance from a young Bulgarian folk group.
