July 30, 2017 In 2017, Africa, Namibia
Swakopmund

Breakfast at Brigadoon was excellent. It is served on your terrace and they give you warm blankets for the chairs. It was a bit chilly as there was a sea mist. They bring a tray with cereals, fruit and yoghurt, then coffee, then eggs and bacon and then toast. We spent most of the morning just relaxing and catching up with uploading photos and then set off for a walk in the afternoon. Our itinerary said we would meet our guide for the next part of the journey but the staff from Brigadoon were unable to contact anyone and we didn’t know when he’d arrive so just went out when we were ready. The initial contact with the driver or guide in Namibia has been the only frustrating bit of this part of the trip. The tour company is not good at letting you know when they will arrive but once in their hands everything is very well organised.
Anyway we had a brisk walk north along the seafront to a new commercial and residential development that is still being completed. It has a big supermarket and some nice shops and cafes. We had a coffee and some food (justified due to the walk) and then headed back. Google Earth says 7km in total.

These succulent garden areas have gardeners that seem to move the hoses constantly
The suburban streets appear to be made of sand

Our new guide is Wilfred, who lives in Swakopmund and he arrived at 6pm to drive us around the town and point out historic buildings and then take us to dinner, which had we read our itinerary properly we would have known. Evidently the Germans murderd 80% of the local bushmen tribes in the north and had concentration camps around Swakopmund. The locals were very happy to be liberated at the end of WW1 – straight into the arms of the South Africans.

He had booked at Tug, which we were very happy about and we had a pleasant evening. Our new vehicle is a 4WD Mitsubishi Delica with tinted windows and good air conditioning which should make travelling easier. Only Mike and I on this tour for the next 6 days.

Wilfred is the one without ?
