June 13, 2018 In 2018, Croatia
Tuesday 12 June: Dubrovnik.

Today most of the rest of our group left in the morning bound for Belgrade in Serbia. The rest have flights during the day. We set off for the old city to walk the walls before it got too hot and too busy. We went down the end of the road where we caught the number 6 bus that goes all the way into town. We were glad to get on first as it was soon packed.

It is 150 kuna each to go on the wall. That’s about $37 each. There are a LOT of stairs and being ancient, they are not terribly even. The views are spectacular in every direction. The wall is just over 2 km long but it takes a fair while to circumnavigate with photo stops every few steps.

There is still quite a lot of ruined buildings and it’s hard to tell if they’re from the 1980s or several centuries ago. There is also quite a bit of renovation going on.

From the top of the wall you can see there are a surprising number of gardens and green spaces. We also saw a secondary and primary school. We also found the steps for the ‘walk of shame’ scene in Game of a Thrones. The GOT tours are popular but don’t dominate the place at all.

We managed to avoid the worst of the crowds but boy it was hot. By the time we came down we were glad to locate the bar on the rocks overlooking the sea that Mike had spotted from the wall, and imbibe both water and beer. Barbara then went off on a shopping expedition and Mike and I came back to the hotel to enjoy some poolside R and R. Currently watching a pool full of mostly pensioners doing aquarobics. Half of them can’t hear the instructor but on the whole they make a reasonable attempt to copy. The old boys are enjoying the show in any event as the young female instructor demonstrates the exercises from outside the pool.

Barb eventually made it back after an impressive couple of hours in the back streets of old Dubrovnik in the heat of the day. It was lovely in the pool.

We opted to dine in at the Argosy rather than finding our way to somewhere downtown. Again it was excellent food and a lovely outlook. We will be sorry to leave here early tomorrow but are also very much looking forward to the Greek chapter of our expedition. The outlook for Thursday…. Well actually the outlook is for more of much the same but slightly hotter.
