The pick up and transfer to Adelaide airport (with breakfast boxes) all went as planned and we arrived at the airport about an hour before the flight. There was next to no traffic on the way.
We ate bits of our breakfasts in the airport, (the yoghurts were good) then boarded the plane. We got these funny fritter things on the plane, which I declined, and drinks. I had the Diet Coke.
At Hobart airport we were reminded to dump all fresh fruits and vegetables and retrieved our bags. It was just as the dog was walking around my bag on the conveyor belt that I remembered the avocado halves and cheese that I’d carefully packed in a cracker box after the snack meal at Hahndorf. The dog was a fail (luckily as the fine is $400AU). Actually the dog was a double fail as Mike had completely forgotten the leftover apple he’d stuck in his backpack from the breakfast box 😳.
We had to phone the rental car people to send the shuttle as they are about 2km down the road. We didn’t have to wait long and were able to add a third driver at no additional cost. Great work on Jen’s part finding the Apex deal as the car was about $650AU for the entire 10 days and about half the price of the usual suspects.
Steve and I shared the driving while Fiona and Mike battled their germs. We grabbed a sandwich and drink just out of Hobart and then looked for a scenic place to stop. Fiona had grabbed a heated sausage roll and pie for her and Steve so was getting a bit desperate by the time we found an appropriate place.
As it turned out we stopped at this weird little place beside a creek, called Hamilton. It is the first stream we’ve seen with actual water in it. It was really windy and I was the only one game enough to get out at first, although Steve eventually joined me.
The trip to Strahan took nearly 5 hours and was mostly in the rain. The scenery is very pretty and quite similar to parts of New Zealand.
The house we are staying at is very well appointed with plenty of room.
Given it was raining quite heavily we chanced our luck with the steep driveway so we had some cover to unload.
We dropped off Mike and Fiona (who were still feeling dodgy) and then Steve and I visited the local IGA supermarket for provisions.
Their motto is “we care about locals” and boy do they take that literally. Non-locals are dealt with as and when required!
We had sausage and veg for dinner and were off to bed early.
