We were sorry to leave Breezes but excited about going to Nungwi which is at the northern tip of Zanzibar. I still had a heavy head cold and opted to take the pill and cough medicine for the benefit of everyone sharing the vehicle with me. Having said that, I dozed for most of the hour and a half journey and we were glad to arrive just after noon, which was 2 hours before official check in.
Our itinerary originally had us finishing the Serengeti tour back at the airport but we arranged to omit that diversion and came direct to Nungwi.
We were pretty dubious about what we were coming to after the turn off. The access road is awful and you travel through about a half kilometre of building site before pulling up at some security gates. Fortunately we were on the list and gained entry. Nobody just rocks up to the gate hoping for a bed in Zanzibar!
We had a very friendly welcome from a nice young man at reception. He announced we had a full board package (which was news to us. Our itinerary said half board and so did the information I handed over to him but we were happy to be upgraded.) He ceremoniously attached little blue bands to our wrists and went through the brochure explaining the full board package: all meals and drinks except premium spirits, afternoon and morning tea and most activities. We waited a short time and were then taken by golf cart down the hill to our room. It is upstairs in a block of 4 with unobstructed views out to the sea. The room is beautifully appointed. Not as big as either Breezes or Farmhouse but still very spacious with a balcony, dressing room, a lovely bathroom and separate loo.
About 5 minutes later there was a knock on the door and back comes the porter. There has been a mistake. So our blue bracelets were unceremoniously replaced with white bracelets as befits our true status. It turns out that half board means we get all the same stuff except drinks and lunch. We can get the morning tea from 11-12 and afternoon tea from 4-5 however, and entitles you to tea and/coffee, ham, salad or chicken sandwiches, nuts and olives. They roast their own nuts and we were lucky to score some hot straight from the oven. Given that I’m finding the quantity and frequency of food here to be nearing torture, I was happy with half board. (Even when you take only a tiny bit of a tiny selection of salads and vegetables you end up with this huge plate full. Africa must be a vegetarian’s dream.) I suspect we got a rather better room than half board warrants but he wasn’t about to move us at that point tee hee!
There was quite a heavy shower and we both had a nap for a couple of hours. Then we wandered down to check out the lay of the land. It has beautiful gardens and a lovely infinity pool overlooking the sea. Both here and at Breezes they have bougainvillea hedges everywhere which must be glorious in full bloom. The style here is completely different to Breezes, which was far more in the style of a pacific island, however this place, which has a heavy Indian influence, is probably more typical of Zanzibar. There is a sand terrace below the pool area with thatched umbrellas and deck chairs and then you can go down to the sea, which is clear and blue. You end to get accosted by beach traders down there, selling everything from trips to sarongs, so it is much more relaxing up in the resort. You can use kayaks and the afternoons are evidently the best time.
The meal times are from 7.30 to 10.30 morning and night and in the evening you get the choice of the buffer or the carnivore or Japanese restaurants. You need to book a seat at one of the latter and we might try the carnivore restaurant one night. Might as well see what half the stuff we’ve been photographing tastes like.
One thing that is a bit unnerving here is the prevalence of large grey crows around the eating areas. They were feasting on the sugar sachets in the afternoon tea area. Jen’s friend Emma would have an absolute hoony fit. They are not afraid of people and perch on chairs waiting. They make the sparrows seem quite cute.
Dinner was on a terrace dining room overlooking the sea. It’s a big place but spread over areas with the food stations also spread around. You can also order off the a la carte menu and just supplement with the salads and vegetables. I might try that tomorrow night.
