Galápagos Islands Day 3: 28th October

We had a pretty good night. Not too rough and we slept quite well after the boat dropped anchor at about 2.30am.

After breakfast we took the zodiacs to the nearby beach and had a short walk looking at the various sea birds. Today we got up close with red footed boobies. So beautiful. They are a similar size to a black backed gull but have blue beaks and red webbed feet. We also saw Nasqar Boobies that have grey feet and yellow beaks. It’s amazing how close you can get to them. They are completely unfazed. We also saw a heron, frigate birds, finches and a pelican.

After the walk we donned our wet suits and had a snorkel off the beach. Lots of cool fish of various sizes. We swim holding hands as Mike has problems seeing far enough to get his bearings but actually I’m quite happy to have someone close by also.

Then it was back on the boat for hot chocolate and cheese pastries and sausage rolls and sweet potato chips. Any hint of exercise and we get rewarded with yummy food.

We had a short break then lunch and siesta. Like a few others I had a snooze on the sundeck. I tried to put plenty of sunscreen on but missed the backs of my knees.

After siesta it was back on with the wet suits for a deep water snorkel over by some cliffs. I wished we had a waterproof camera as the fished were great. Some seemed pretty big and were all sorts of colours.

We had about 45 minutes snorkeling then back to the boat for more hot chocolate and snacks then into dry clothes for a walk on the far side of the island close to where we did the deep water snorkel. There are some stairs up the cliffs and then you walk along the top. Heaps more Boobies that we could get really close to.

We were looking for this owl that is evidently diurnal as there are no land animals for it to hunt at night. We eventually found one sitting in a crevasse thing on this ancient lava flow.

The iPhone has its limitations!

It was pretty windy up there and getting a bit chilly as we didn’t leave until nearly sunset.

Then it was an early dinner as we needed to sail early as it is a fair way for the next island and the trip will be rough. Dinner was chicken, veges and salad.

On our way back to our cabin we stopped to watch these 2 large sharks that a couple of the group had spotted. They would be at least 2 metres. Not huge by shark standards but intimidating enough for most of us. You could see them quite clearly in the light on the waters the back of the boat.

Ok, so tonight is going to be rough. Not quite sure how I’ll get unchanged let alone manage the loo! We have tried to secure everything into drawers. Hopefully dinner also stays secure.
