July 20, 2023 In 2023, England, Totnes
Day 28: July 18th

We didn’t have to check out until noon so got caught up with some admin and then set off for Devon via some more Cotswold villages.
First we went to Upper Slaughter and then to Lower Slaughter but neither had anywhere obvious to park and both were rather more like something out of a film set rather than real villages. They are very historic and preserved but totally catering for tourists.
Google maps is very good but I do find it hard to get used to driving down these roads that at home you’d swear are someone’s driveway. I’m also very anxious that it’s actually a two way road and not one way, but so far haven’t got that wrong.

At home I’d assume this was a driveway.
This is common

We drove on to Bourton on the Water which is bigger and close to Cheltenham and would be able to provide coffee. Bourton on the Water is also a very touristy spot but does have a good sized car park and a nice walkway down to the village. It was very picturesque walking along the side of the stream but the eateries were not interested in providing just 2 coffees as they were too busy. Luckily we found a tea rooms that had outside tables and their kitchen was closed so they only did drinks. A coffee for me and a coke for Mike and we were soon on our way.

Bourton on the Water
There can never be too many fish and chip shops! Let’s have one in a historic Georgian building.

You basically drive the whole way to Devon along the M5 which is a very nice road. We stopped at a motorway service centre near Taunton for a break and then it was on to Totnes.
We thought we were actually staying in Totnes so it was a surprise when Google took us down some very narrow lanes and then down beside the river Dart. We are actually staying at the Maltsters Arms in Tuckenhay which is 4 miles away. We have an excellent room that overlooks the Dart River and is twice the size of the one in Ebringham. And there’s a radiator in the bathroom beside the towel rail so I can get washing dry!
It was great to catch up with Pauline and we enjoyed an excellent fish dinner here.

The Maltsters Arms
The rear view of the hotel is not so flash. Our room is the upstairs floor above that tent thing. It runs the length of the building with our other window on the stone wall at the left that overlooks the river.
Behind the Maltsters Arms looking towards the direction of Dartmouth.
And in the other direction.
