Lovely scenery on the afternoon boat trip. The light on the reeds and papyrus was amazing. We stopped near the camp’s water pump and could see the solar panels that power it on the roof of the raft. The whole camp runs on solar power.
Karl pointed out the channels that are elephant paths down to the papyrus which they eat like sugar cane. They eat the lower stalks that are softer and sweeter. We had to manoeuvre around a huge hippo sitting in a pool under a tree and also saw several small and one enormous crocodile sunning themselves.
At one point we passed an island and the baboons were going crazy barking. Also these birds (called go away birds) were doing their go away calls. Karl was pretty sure there was either a leopard or lion under the trees.
We stopped beside the papyrus for a sundowner to enjoy the setting sun.
Wonderful colours.
The evening entertainment from the staff was particularly good as the parent company (Desert and Delta Safaris) was filming a promotional video. The general manager was there in full national costume leading the singing and dancing. In another life he could be an operatic singer. A glorious baritone voice. They got all the guests up to dance and it was really fun. We had another great dinner although the range of food was not quite as good as Savute, although the accomodation itself is exceptional. Had a great chat with Sophia and Rita and learned heaps about Angola and Portugal. Sophia has given us the names and directions to some excellent restaurants and vineyards in CapeTown. Not that we will need to eat. The girls leave in the morning which is a shame. They are great company.
We had a much better sleep. No noise from hippos – or not that we heard.
