It’s our last morning in Nungwi and it is fine again. We awoke to the sound of the pneumatic digger on the construction site next door. I feel so sorry for the people in the rooms closest. Lucky about the reservation mix up on arrival or that could have been us!
Check out is at a very civilised noon so we were able to have late breakfast and then get packed. Not that we really unpacked.
Our transfer is not until 6.30pm so we are going to relax up in reception and maybe go down for late lunch as we won’t get dinner. It’s not terribly relaxing at reception actually because the staff seem to be very noisy. But the actual waiting area is nice. It’s full of large round couches and the area itself is right at the top of the hill with lovely views over the grounds and down to the sea. All of the accomodation units are located in a terraced arrangement down to the pool and dining room just above the beach.
Today is going to be our only really long and uncomfortable travel day. Jen arranged for us to have the full day here in Nungwi rather than lose a day with travel. The downside is that we have a very early start tomorrow in order to get to Livingstone at midday. From here we travel by road back south to the airport for a flight to Dar es Salaam at about 9pmish. We get there at about 9.40pm and then transfer to a hotel, which is hopefully close to the airport. Clearly Dar Es Salaam is not far from Zanzibar.
Our flight to Livingstone leaves at 6am and being an international flight we will need to check in at 4am I guess. It will be a short stay at the Conway Hotel. Our flight to Livingstone goes via Johannesburg where we have a 2 hour wait. Seems a bit odd but I think it’s to ensure our international flights are with a reputable airline.
At some point we will need to change our money as we have a wad of Tanzanian cash left. A bit of Zambian and the rest into Botswanan I guess. I wonder how many zeros the money has in Botswana.
We spent a while chilling in reception then went down to the pool bar, which was a lot cooler with natural air conditioning. We ordered some chefs salads and cokes and then a glass of wine. That was when the problem started. They brought us the bill to sign off in $US and at that point realised we had technically checked out. Therefore we were not in the system. I asked for the total in Tanzanian money and the amount kept changing. Then I offered to pay by credit card and the amount got even less. Eventually (after the waiter bent low and said he had a special price) Michael twigged that we were not in the system so whatever we paid was going to our 2 friendly waiters. We eventually paid about $43NZ and got an additional glass of wine and rum and coke. We could have had more but it was only 4pm so decided on moderation. With heaps of people being on full board, I dare say our food and drink was put against someone else.
