Our tent is very comfortable and has a lovely outlook over the river. We had some rain yesterday and the river rose quite a bit so it must be quite a torrent in heavy rain.
This morning we were woken reasonably early by what I thought, fancifully, were hippos but it was the cattle coming back across the crossing a hundred metres upstream. There are also some resident geese that made a racket.
There are monkeys all over the place. They love running across our roof and straight into this tree alongside, then onto a bigger tree on the waters edge. Evidently they are Vervet Monkeys.
On the topic of monkeys, one of the couples went into their tent this morning after breakfast and went straight to the bathroom without zipping the front. When the wife looked around, a monkey was on the table and took off with their apple. All happened in a flash. The proverbial cheeky monkey.
Just now I saw a baboon come out of that tree and stroll past our stairs. The staff chase the baboons away. I’m a bit nervous of them (the baboons not the staff) as they are a bit too unafraid of us.
We’ve now got the cattle on their way back and groups wander down to the river to drink. No crocodiles in this bit as it’s too shallow (at the moment). When they’ve finished they just trot on back up the bank.
There’s a pool here but it’s nice on the veranda, provided you are well and truly lathered with insect repellent.
There is a generator here that gets turned off for 4 hours from midday and midnight though the water heating is solar. They always have wifi in the lobby and generally it’s pretty good.
Getting a cup of tea or coffee is a mission though. The staff have jobs so that they can wait on you, so there’s no filling up a cup with hot water. It all gets served in pots and seems to come from the bar. A little bit strange given there is a water urn in the dining room. Drinks are not too badly priced. You have to pay for drinks except tea and coffee and the bottles of water they give you each morning. The local beer is Tusker and it’s US$3.50 per 500ml bottle, which isn’t too bad. We have our own water on the truck so we can fill up bottles at any time.
One couple decided to pay for 2 additional game drives today as they go straight back after the Serengeti. This morning they saw 4 lions and about 8 cubs all playing together and then a male and female lion doing the wild thing. They also saw a crocodile not far from the hippos, which were out and walking around. Evidently hippos and crocodiles tend to keep their distance. I hope I see a crocodile. No snakes so far – touch wood.
